Kick it up a notch – 6/21/11 – Tuesday Karate class

June 21, 2011 by doug Leave a Comment

Sensei Noia  had us start out with a light jog back and forth across the dojo about five times.  The dojo is a basket ball court to give a frame of reference on the size of it.  The next few times across, we jogged to the third court line, then sprinted to the other side third court line and jogged to the end.  Next, we shuffled sideways back and forth and then we did walking front leg raises across and back.

One person kicks, one person squats and hope you don’t get kicked….

We stood in front of our partner and did front leg roundhouse kick both high and low followed up with rear leg roundhouse kick high and low to get our kicks going.  We did this in alternating fashion where one partners did the first front leg kick and then the other did their front leg kick and so on.

For the next drill, we did a movement that I do not remember doing before.  We started out facing our partner, one partner then squats down very low and puts their hands over their head.  From there, the other partner does an outside in crescent kick over the squatting partner.

After that, We stood back up and did front leg roundhouse low, roundhouse high and hook kick with the same leg and not touching the ground between kicks.  We finished doing a 10 different kicks without touching our leg to the ground between each kick.  I am it too about number six and I was ready to fall down.

For the last kicking drill partner kicking drill, we got a pad and did spinning back kicks, many times.  I am really starting to enjoy this kick for some reason.  It just feels natural for some reason.

Lights out….

We were just getting ready to do some more kicking drills and suddenly the lights went out.  There was a strong storm outside and the power dropped out just long enough for the lights to go off.  There were still lights in the hallway outside the dojo and Sensei took advantage of the darkness and had us do some slow motion kata.  We did two katas of our choice while the lights were coming back on.

Somewhere during the class we did two sets of 25 push ups.  I don’t remember doing push ups for some time now but they felt easier than in the past.

More kicks…..

We finished up class with some more kicks.  Sensei had us stand next to a wall and put one hand on it.  From there, we brought up one knee to the side and did roundhouse kicks for a total of 50 for each leg.

For the last drill, we brought up our knee to the front and did side thrust kicks.  We only did 30 for each leg but there was a long hold in between each kick.

Lots of work, sore legs equals great Karate class!

Hate the stopwatch, not the Sensei – 6/17/11 – Friday Karate class

June 17, 2011 by doug Leave a Comment

Now that exams are over, Sensei Brien has been giving us some specialized training classes.  He has been sharing specific techniques help make us better fighters and improve our Karate overall.

Attack, block the kick and counter attack…..

For our first drill, we started out in front of our partner, both in a fighting stance.  From there, one partner shuffled in and reverse punched and as they moved out, the other partner threw a front snap kick at them, on their way out.  From there, the partner moving out needs to block the front kick and counter attack.  We spent a good amount of the class working on this one drill.

One of the most important parts of this drill was to turn the kicking partner off center after blocking their kick.  If you did a normal downward block, using the outside of their your forearm, chances are it would take them slightly off center and allow you to counter to the front of their head or body.  This would also give them a chance to block and or counter back if they could move fast enough.

Another way to do it was to use the inside part of the forearm to block the kicking partners body and turn them by 90 degrees or move.  This allows for a counter attack to the side or back of the head or body with no chance of them counter attacking again.

We also did this drill in an anchor man fashion where have the class stood on on side doing the kick as the other group when down the line doing their attack, block and counter attack.  This gives everyone a chance to work with different size and skill levels.

Hate the stopwatch, not the Sensei….

Sensei brought his stopwatch to class today.  When he has the stop watch with him, that usually guarantees that we are going to do some type of endurance training.  Sensei had us move into a lunge stance and put a pad on the floor under the back leg knee.  From there, our partner stood in front of us and we stretched into a longer lunge stance and reverse punched.  After the punch, that partner would lunge back an touch their knee to the pad again for 30 seconds.

I want to say there was another timed drill, that might have involved kicking but for some reason, my mind must be blocking it out.  It must have been a tough one.

Hold back your demons – 6/16/11 – Thursday Karate class

June 16, 2011 by doug Leave a Comment

Sensei Cieplik gave a tough leg workout today.  This was the first class of the session and Sensei always like to go back to fundamental training and that always involves some “hit them with your knee” drills.

Start with some kicks….

After our warm up, we started in a left foot forward front stance, did a rear leg front snap kick, then turned 90 degrees and stepped back, putting the kicking leg down behind us.  We did the same drill again but this time with two front snap kicks.  The next drill was similar but different.  We started with left foot forward in a front stance again, did a front snap kick, then from the kicking leg retracted position we did a low sweeping (muck like a low crescent kick) to turn the body 90 degrees, then step back with the kicking leg and throw a reverse punch.  The sweeping motion was really hard to grasp for me but after a few moves, it got a little better.

Hit them with your leg….

We started moving forward and backward, in a front stance with a front punch.  We then did moving forward and back with triple punch.  Sensei made a point that we should keep our hips forward and just punch when doing this drill.  No hip rotation here.

For the next drill, Sensei had us stand upright and punch.  The key here was to have the draw or pull hand do 50 percent of the work and the punching hand to do 50 percent of the work.  This allows the body to make power without using the hips.  Now, Sensei did mention that squeezing the heels and tightening the glutes (butt) does help make the punch more effective.
Hold back your demons….

For the next drill, we started in a back stance, moving forward and back with a knife hand block.  The key to the back stance is keeping the front foot quiet when moving forward.  To keep it quiet, you keep most of your weight on your back legs and set the front foot down gently with the toes first and not the heel.

This is where holding back your demons comes in.  When moving forward or back, you have to keep your weight and chin back.  Sensei shows this feeling in a really simple way to understand.  You are in your back stance, and he stands behind you, pushing on your back and you hold him back.  The idea is to hold all that power back when in a back stance.  You are in a defense move and your are telling your attacker that you better stay away or all this power is going to be unleashed upon you.

We also do the same drill with front snap kick, come down with knife hand block.  Then we did the same again but after the front snap kick we did front stance with spear hand.

Get a partner and hit them with your leg….

Sensei wanted us to work on the same drill and hit a partner with our leg.  The drill had both partners in a front stance, one partner stepped and put their back foot to the outside of the other partners front foot.  From there the attacking partner put their knee on the inside of the partners leg.  This put the attacking partners foot on the outside and the knee on the inside.  From there, we pushed forward with our knee and this motion takes our partner down to the ground.  This puts a lot of pressure on the knee and easily makes them drop with even the slightest pressure to the knee.

After this, Sensei had us do moving forward and backward with triple punch but without a partner but keeping the same hit them with your leg technique.

Finish up with some kata….

We spent the rest of the class working on some kata.  We started with Heian Shodan twice, then Heian Nidan, then came Heian Godan twice, Tekki Shodan, Jion, Kanku Dai and Bassai Dai.  My legs and hips were roasted at that point and the feeling of jello came to mind at that point.
