This is a log of my journey to Shotokan Karate Shodan and beyond.

Friday Karate class – 11/9/07 – Advanced one-step sparring.

This was an interesting class.

Sensei Plocharczyk led the class and started us out with some kata for a warm up. We started with Heian Shodan and continued all the way to Bassai Dai. I was able to keep up without much trouble until we got to Bassai Dai where I was lost. I felt pretty good after I did Tekki Shodan since Sensei said that it looked much better than before. He said I was much more relaxed and I didn’t muscle through it like I used to do.

After the katas, Sensei had us do something a little different. We spent the rest of the class working on advance one-step sparring. The attacks were the same, but the counters were different.

The first group of counters was using different moves than the normal reverse punch or front punch. I used hammer fist as my counter. My opponent moved forward with jodan oi-ziki and I moved to the outside and countered with a tetsui to jodan. This move was pretty effective since my opponent would still be moving forward as my hammer fist would strike his face. My opponent used a similar approach and countered with a ridge hand.

Next, we worked on countering with only one kick. We didn’t need to block, just get out of the way and kick. For this, my opponent would attack with a front punch to the head. I would move to the outside and hit him with a front snap kick to the stomach. Moving to the inside would allow for a solid low kick to the groin area.

We then worked on countering with two kicks. This was a little more difficult for me since my roundhouse kick is not the best. My opponent would attack with a front snap kick, I would then counter with a round house to his stomach and a low front snap kick to his groin from behind.

Above is just a few examples of what we did. There are so many different counters that can be used such as knife hand block and strike to name one. One of the things that made this class work well was we did all the moves very slowly so that we could fully understand the movements instead of flying through it as full speed.

Good class!

Tuesday Karate class – 11/6/07 – Many kicks and lots of kihon.

What an excellent class!

There are some days when I have good classes and some days when they are just excellent. I felt really good in class even though I didn’t sleep very well last night. My legs felt strong and loose even though I started lifting weights again yesterday.

We started with some Kihon. Sensei Gatch took us through downward block, rising, inward and outward block with reverse punch. He doesn’t give any rest and has us do the moves both forward and backward. It really tests my endurance but it seems better now than ever. Next, he had us do moving forward and backward with knife hand block, front kick and nukite.

Sensei Noia then broke us up into groups. He took all the purple, brown and black belts. He had us do a bunch of kicking drills. I used to never like doing kicks but since my hips are working better, I don’t mind them and even enjoy them when I feel good. We did moving forward front snap kick to the front and side thrust kick to the side. After that came front snap kick to the front and side thrust kick to the front. I have some balance issues with the side thrust kick to the front but it is improving.

Next, Sensei Noia had three of “big guys” hold a pad so that the others could side thrust kick a target. We did that for about 10 minutes and then Sensei Noia let the three of us kick the pad while he held it. I was kicking hard but using the ball of my foot instead of my heel. Sensei helped me correct that it made the kick feel much more powerful and driven.

After that, Sensei had us pair up for one-step sparring. I really felt good and was able to easily clear my partners foot when moving out of the way and blocking. I need to work a little on making sure that I don’t lean when I counter but other than that it felt great.

We finished up with a kata. One kata but it had to be our best. My kata felt good and my horse stance was lower than usual.

Sensei Noia was satisfied with everyones performance and said that we all looked good.

Before class, I did:

10 – Tekki Shodan and one each of Heian Shodan and Heian Nidan.

Sunday – 11/4/07 Karate Kick-A-Thon against Cancer – 1000 kicks and punches for a good cause.

November 4, 2007 by doug Leave a Comment

Today was our annual Kick-A-Thon against Cancer.

Every year, our club arranages a day where groups of Karate students come out and do a total of 1000 kicks and pucnhes to help people in our club and charities for cancer research and treatment.  This fund raiser brings in a good amount of money and really helps those in need.

We went to the first session of 12 or 16 total across multiple locations.  Sensei Noia lead the event at our location and did all of the moves with us.  There were around 40 people and everyone had a good time.  The time limit to do all 1000 moves is one hour but we ended up finishing almost 15 minutes early.  The group was really on today and everyone was pushing themselves to the limit.

I think this is my fourth Kick-A-Thon since I have been taking Karate and this one felt easier than all the others.  I was sweating but I didn’t feel tired out and I think I could have done another 500 moves or more.  I didn’t have any problems breathing and I didn’t notice and pains in my legs or my body in general even though I was really pushing myself.  I am glad to see that all of the classes and other training I am doing is really working.
