Let the kicks begin

April 22, 2014 by doug Leave a Comment

Today’s class was full of kicking basics and many of them. Sensei Noia wants to ensure that the students who are testing, have good kicks this time and tonight was a good example of those intentions.

Let the kicks begin

We did the following basics for nearly 50 minutes:

  • All from a horse stance: front punch, triple punch, rising block, inward block, outward block and downward block
  • Stationary front snap kick in front stance
  • Stationary front snap kick twice – one chudan other jodan and set it back behind on each kick
  • Roundhouse kick the front and set it back down behind
  • Hook kick to the front and set it down behind
  • Side thrust kick to the front and set it back behind
  • Spinning back kick then set it down behind – this was an interesting movement to say the least
  • Roundhouse kick to the front and spinning back kick and set the foot down behind – this was more interesting than above

All of the above kicks were extra tough since we had to set our foot back down behind us after each kick. It requires a lot of body control especially when you are doing kicks other than front snap kick.  Keeping from falling over is one important aspect that I was struggling with.

All of the following kicks were done moving forward:

  • Front kick and side kick to the front
  • Front kick, side kick, back kick, roundhouse kick set it down behind
  • Front kick, side kick, back kick, roundhouse kick, hook kick, set it down behind
  • From horse stance, the follow three moves, step across, step behind and shuffle up side thrust kick
  • Step behind side thrust kick – we did these again because they are extra strong kicks
  • Moving forward with roundhouse kick and spinning back kick

After all the kicks, from a front stance, we did moving forward, rising block with reverse punch, inward block with reverse punch, outward block with reverse punch and downward block with reverse punch.

Next came a quick round of one step sparring and then we did two katas to end the class.

More kicking is needed, at least for me

I can’t speak for the other students since 90% are a third to a quarter of my age, but these all these kicks were very hard for me to execute with clean form. Except for the front snap kicks and back kicks, most of them felt very off balance and even worse once I started to get tired.

With that said, classes like these really make me realize that I need to practice my kicks more often.

Good Karate classes go by too fast

April 15, 2014 by doug Leave a Comment

Today’s class covered sparring, basics and kata. Sensei made sure that we had a taste of everything today and sadly, it made the class go by too quickly.

Free sparring and one step

Class started with some free sparring to get everyone warmed up. We switched partners about every minute so that almost everyone had a chance to work with every other student.

After the free sparring, we worked on one-step sparring. We did all six of our attacks which includes:

  • Front punch to the face
  • Front punch to the stomach
  • Front snap kick to the stomach
  • Side thrust kick to the stomach
  • Roundhouse kick to the stomach or head
  • Spinning back kick to the stomach

Time for basics

Sensei was able to fit a lot of basics into a short period of time. We started with moving forward, front snap kick and side thrust kick to the side. We did the same again but we added back kick and then an extra front snap kick for a total of four kicks with each count.

Next came front snap kick, side thrust kick, back kick and front snap kick. We did the same but this time added reverse punch after the four kicks.

For the next kicking drill we did side thrust kick and roundhouse kick to the front then step down with reverse punch. We then did roundhouse kick and side thrust kick to the front still stepping forward with a reverse punch.

We finished up our kicking basics with double front snap kick and double roundhouse kick moving forward. The double roundhouse kicks are done moving forward in a front stance with two steps and two kicks.

Next we worked on the rest of our basics which included moving forward and backward in a back stance with a knife hand block, front snap kick into a front stance with a spear hand strike. Next, we worked on front stance with inward block, move into horse stance with elbow strike and back fist.

The last kihon drill was outward block with jab and reverse punch.

We finished class working on the kata of your choice.

Hit the pad with a high outward block

April 1, 2014 by doug Leave a Comment

For today’s class, Sensei had us spend half the class on working on our form and the other half working on hitting the pads with a technique that we normally do not use on the pads.

Check your technique

We started out doing slow motion punches while standing. The key is to rub both arms on our body when punching.  After the slow punches came harder punches and making sure that we tighten our stomach and squeeze the floor with each punch. Putting all this together and using the entire body makes the movements as strong and efficient as possible.

Next came slow punches, fast punches and all blocks from a horse stance using the same parameters as above.

Then we moved into a front stance, starting with our reverse hand out we did various blocks. The key here is to pull the draw hand back fast and move from the hips. Instead of pushing with the front hip, pull the back hip back fast. This action of pulling the hip back makes a lot of sense because you have to open your hips to do the blocks.

We did the same starting with reverse hand out again, but this time we did a block, then a reverse punch, and a block again. The idea here was to get the hip action of opening, closing and opening the hips again.

Hit the pad with a high outward block

Next, we found a partner and a pad and worked on manji uke (high outward block and low downward block) hitting the pad with the top arm high outward block. I don’t remember ever doing this drill in the past but it was a good way to learn how that technique actually feels when hitting an object. Even though it is a block, using power and hip movement to strike the pad gave a feeling of how effective that movement can be.

Attention to Karate kihon and kata details

We then put the pads away and did the manji uke moving forward. The key was to reach with both hands and ensure that we brought our knees together when moving.

For the next drill, we started in a front stance with our hands in the assisted block position and did the next move, from Heian Godan, where you do the double open hand movement (low level open left hand strike with sweeping open right hand block). The key to this movement is to turn very fast, the drop and let the hips do the strike and block.

We finished up with some specific work on Kanku Dai. We started standing with our draw hand tight on our side, then drop the body and use the hips to strike with a left open hand rising block and high right hand horizontal knife hand strike, then front snap kick, after the kick turn 180 degrees and execute a manji uke, do the double open hand strike (low level open left hand strike with sweeping open right hand block) and pull back to the starting position with our draw hand tight on our side. After that, Sensei had us do Kanku Dai twice and then one kata of our choice.
