ISKC Karate Banquet – 11/2/08

November 2, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

We had our Karate banquet and award dinner today.  It used to be an annual event but we didn’t have one in 2007 so it was nice to get together with everyone.

They always have some really nice video presentations and this year, being it was our clubs 30th anniversary, the videos were really good.  The first video was really neat because it was a bunch of pictures from 1980’s.  They started out with pictures of our senior Sensei, Sensei DiPasquale doing kata poses to the song Bad from Michael Jackson.  There were really good pictures of many of our instructors when they were very young, including Sensei Cieplik.

We also had four excellent demonstrations.  I did video tape them and will try to put them up on here when I have the time.  The demo started with three young black belts who are the Synchronized Kata Team National Champions.  Their kata was excellent and their timing was great.

After that came and excellent self defense demo.  It was really we done and Dale Weber ended up doing a back flip was just unreal.

One of our younger students and a cancer survivor did an excellent demo of Heian Nidan and Heian Sandan.  She is an inspiration to all Karate athletes both young and old.

The last demo was performed by William Gatch.  He is the top kata competitor in our club and will one day be the world champion.  He did an awesome Unsu that brought the house down.  There is no doubt in my mind that he will do all the way on day soon.

They also handed out the awards such as scholorships award and others.  My wife, son and I recieved leadership plaques since we assist with classes and the suprise of the night for me was the “Most Improved Senior Male” award.  I had no idea that I was getting the award and was honored to recieve it.

It was good time for all and a night that I won’t forget anytime soon.

A busy weekend and a Karate tournament – 10/12/08

October 12, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

We didn’t have Karate class on Thursday since it was a scheduled day off but I didn’t take class on Friday or Saturday since I was a kumite referee seminar with Sensei Alex Miladi, on Friday and early Saturday and a kata judging seminar later on Saturday with Sensei Jesse Canedo.  I learned a great deal and enough to referee and judge at our club tournament on Sunday.

I cannot say enough about how good it was to work with those visiting Sensei’s.  Not only did they give great seminars, we had hands on, practical application.

The tournament took place on Sunday and I was working as an official throughout the day until around 4:00 when my son competed.  My son did all three events this time and ended up with a second place medal in kihon.  He needs some more work on his kata and kumite skills but he and I are going to be working on that in the near future.

I competed too and entered the kata and kihon events.  I walked away with the forth place medal in kihon.

It was a busy but great weekend and I walked away with a lot of experience both as an official and competitor.

Some new kihon drills – 9/22/08 – Monday Karate class

September 22, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Hips forward and step…

Sensei Brien had us start in a front stance with our hips forward and stepped forward across the gym.  Sensei wanted to make sure that we were bringing our knees together when stepping.

Sensei had us do a drill that I have never done before.  We started with our hips forward in a front stance.  We tried to stay low while bringing our knee together with our legs bent.  From there, we stepped forward and put both hands out in front like a double punch.  We then pulled back and into the position with our knees bent and together and then we put our other foot forward into the front stance with both hands out.

New combination drill…

We started in a front stance, then step and punch, turn 180 degrees around into a front stance and downward block, then step punch, turn around into a back stance with knife hand block, step punch, turn around front stance with outward block.  This movement really opens up the hips.

Back stances…

Next came moving forward and backward with back stance knife hand block.  Then a little different drill, moving forward and backward, stationary knife hand block, step forward and knife hand block again.  Before we moved, we did the knife hand block and then after we moved we did again.

Horse stances related to kata…

When doing the horse stance moves in both Jion and Hiean Sanda, Sensei said we need to bring our knee up to sternum before doing the movements.  For example, when doing downward block with horse stance in jion we bring the knee up high and then twist our hip right at the end before the foot touches the floor.

Kata…

We spent the rest of the class working on kata.  We did Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan and Heian Sandan trying to apply what we learned in the drills above.  I really like doing kata right after we learn something new because it gives me more ideas and possibilites on how to execute the moves based on my body.
