Best time to prepare for exams – 12/14/09 – Monday Karate class

Sensei Brien had us work on preparing for our rank exams but as of yesterday all exams are over for this session.  With that said, Sensei said the best time to start to prepare for our exams is now.  Don’t wait for three, four or five months to start preparing, start preparing now.

Getting to the core….

Sensei spent a lot of time give us tips on how we can work our core to improve our Karate.

We started with simple sit ups.  After that, Sensei had us put our knees down to the side and we did more sit ups.

Next came standing drills to help us engage the proper muscles when punching.  We started with our hands out in front in a fist with the palms facing forward, we then turned the palms over and tightened our butt muscles while pushing our hips forward.

Next, we worked on a simple punching drill.  From standing, we put one hand out in front and the other on our side.  We slowly punched and then pushed our hips forward and tightened our butt muscles and upper back muscles as the punch finished.

The next drill was lying leg raises.  We laid on our back with our legs straight up in the air and we pushed our feet up bringing our lower body and lower back off the ground.

Simple tips and drills to help us improve…

When moving forward and backward, try keep the stationary ankle straight.  When stepping into a front stance, keeping the both the back foot and front foot straight ahead will improve all basic movements.

For the next drill, we stood with both feet on a low pad.  We then leaned forward like we were skiing to stretch our calves.  The next drill was standing in a front stance with our back foot up on pad, trying to push our heel down.  This was a really good stretch.

Next came a drill for the hips.  With one foot on the pad and the other on the floor, we evened our hips by picking the foot up from the floor.  This is a mobility drill to help the hips.

Last but not least, Sensei suggested the we ring our feet out each day.  This movement is much like ringing out a wet towel.

It was good class with some good food for thought and some things to work on over the holiday break.

Things to work on – 12/10/09 – Thursday Karate class

Now that exams are over for most of us, Sensei Cieplik had us working on some things that he wants us to correct for future exams.

Working the bugs out…

After our warm up, we moved into knee strike with front snap kick.  Then came moving forward and  back with rising block, downward block, inward block and outward block all with reverse punch.  Sensei also had us do outward block with a twist.  We did the outward block with our draw hand under our blocking arm instead of over.

Next, we worked on moving forward and back in a back stance with knife hand block.  Sensei then added a little twist and had us the same movement but with a squat between each.  For example, move forward with knife hand block, then squats, move forward again and squat.  This was tough.

We then did back stance, front snap kick and spear hand strike.

Work those kicks….

We did double front snap kick, double roundhouse kick, and shuffle up with front leg roundhouse kick finishing with reverse punch.

Next came horse stance with step across, side thrust kick, then side snap kick and then both of them with one step.

We also worked on a similar movement where we stepped across with the lead leg behind and then we did a kick.  What a strong kick and it can be done from a lazy front or horse stance.

All kata’s….

Sensei had us do all kata’s from H1 to H5, then Tekki Shodan, Jion and Bassai Dai.  We did Jion and Bassai Dai more than a few times.

For Tekki Shodan, I had asked a question about the arm movements after the step across outward block.  The first movement is an upper block in front of the face with a gedan strike, the next move is much like a rising block with a chudan strike and the last move is a jodan strike with the palm of the fist turned torward the body.

Sensei had me work on a special drill for the yama zuki in Bassai Dai.  He had one of us hold a pad on the wall while the other punched, driving the bottom hand with the hip.  The top hand stays loose and the bottom hand strikes with power coming the hips.  Hitting objects makes the moves so much more understandable.

Sensei also gave me drill to help me improve my horse stance.  He had me start in a wide stance with my toes turned out, then he had me squats as low as I could.  After that, he had me push my knees out then straighten up, turn my toes in, and then tuck my butt under.  I have an uphill battle with these messed up hips of mine but anything is possible.

The results are in and I now have a Shodan in my family.

I’ll start with the best news first!  My son Donald is now a Shodan.  After almost eight years of hard training, that he started when he was just a little boy, he took his Shodan test last Saturday and earned his black belt.

He spent the last six months, training in Karate class four days a week and lifting weights at least three days a week.  He looked different than ever before at his exam with a drive and focus that I never seen from him before.  I don’t think I could be any prouder of him than I am now!

My son the Shotokan Shodan!

I also took my exam last weekend and cleared my keri which makes me a full 1st Kyu.  I gave everything I had at my exam but I guess I still have some more things to improve before I catch up to my son.  I trained like an animal and had days where I still trained even though I could hardly walk some mornings but I know in the end, it will all be worth it.  Now I plan on training even harder over the next six months.

Either way, I am glad exams are over and now I hope to keep this blog up to date going forward again.  Also, did I mention how proud I am of my son?
