Punch forward and down – 11/5/09 – Thursday Karate class

November 5, 2009 by doug Leave a Comment

There have been some classes where Sensei Cieplik has us do certain movements that might not be understood until you have some to digest them.  Today was one of those classes.

Punch forward and down….

After doing the usual combinations of rising block, downward block, inward block and outward block with reverse punch we did an old drill a new way.  After that we worked on moving forward with front punch but we did it with a twist.  Instead of just punching forward, Sensei had us also punch down.  Not punching lower but downward pushing the knee forward.  In order to do this, the hips need to be pointing forward and not down.  I know for many of the younger students, pointing the hips forward is easy but for some of us worldly students, like me, having the hips forward is not as easy.   I had to stand in a higher stance in order to get this movement to work but it really does make it feel much more powerful.  Another part of this drill was to turn or twist the fist as it hits the target.

Get a partner….

Next, we got a partner and worked on a similar drill but without the full motion.  Sensei had us stand with our arm locked and push forward from the hips into our partners abdominals.

We then worked on one-step.  One partner would front snap kick and the other partner steps in, scoops the kick, with a block that looks like the one near the end of Bassai Dai, and then does a knife hand or even open hand attack to the throat.  Because you scooped and are holding the leg, you can pull up in the leg and push the throat which causes the attacker to fall backward, head or neck first on to the ground.  This is a very simple but serious movement that can cause a lot of damage to an attacker.

Kata….

We spent the rest of the class working on kata.  We started with Heian Shodan all the way to Heian Godan.  We then worked on Tekki Shodan.

Next came Jion.  Sensei gave us some details that he had told us before but they became much clearer to me today.  When doing the first movement of Jion, it is both a soft and hard movement.  The rubbing or crossing of the arms is the soft part of the movement and the downward and upward block are hard.  This movement goes all the way back to Heian Sandan.

We finished up Bassai Dai for the 2nd and 1st kyu’s and some Kanku Dai for the Shodan’s and above.

Stance, stance, stance, stance – 11/3/09 – Tuesday Karate class

November 3, 2009 by doug Leave a Comment

This class was torture for me for some reason.  I couldn’t turn my hips to save my life and my stances just didn’t feel correct.  It felt like my right hip was jammed into my lower back and bending low just wasn’t an option for me today.

Face your partner….

For our first drill, we got a partner and stood across from each other.  From there, Sensei Noia had one of us throw a front punch to the head while the other did a rising block.  We followed that punch to the stomach with inward block and punch to below the belt and downward block.  This was pretty good drill but murder on my forearm that my son punched yesterday when we were doing one-step together.

Make those hips work….

Sensei had us work on moving our hips.  For example, we would do an outward block, then do a reverse outward block and then another outward block all while standing in a stationary front stance.  The idea wasn’t just to twist our hips, Sensei wanted us to snap them very fast.  It was extremely hard for me to do this drill and I could hardly bend my back leg when my hips were open in a blocking stance.  This movement is a great drill for helping with Bassai Dai.

Stances in kata….

For the rest of the class we worked on stance drills with movements from Jion and Bassai Dai.  These drills were really tough.

For example, Sensei Noia would have us do certain moves over and over.  From Jion, we worked on moving from yoi to crossleg stance with low x-block.  After eight to 10 moves, we would step forward and work on moving from double outward block to high x-block.

In Bassai Dai, we worked on many of the double blocks with more focus on hip movement like earlier.  We ended up going through each move of both kata’s in groups of two or three movements.

It was an excellent class but I wish my body would have cooperated more.

Kicks and kata – 11/2/09 – Monday Karate class

November 2, 2009 by doug Leave a Comment

I don’t remember doing this many kicks in one class in a long time.

Get a partner…

We started out in a horse stance across from our partner.  From there, we did 10 each single punch, double punch and triple punch and then it was our partners turn.  For the next drill, we got a foam pad in stood it on the floor between us.  We then moved into a front stance and alternated kicks back and forth.  We started with front snap kicks and then we moved to front snap kick with roundhouse kick.

Kata and kicks….

For this drill, Sensei Brien had one parter find a place to do their belt kata and the other partner stood off to the side kicking over the foam pad.  We did side thrust kicks with both legs for one drill and front kick, side thrust kick and back kick for the other drill.  Each of us did kata’s.  When doing the single side thrust kicks, I was able to do somewhere around 30 with each leg in the time it took my partner to finish his kata and Sensei to call yame.

Many one-steps….

For the rest of the class, we worked on one-step sparring.  We started out doing head level front punches, 10 stomach level front punches, 10 front snap kicks and 10 side thrust kicks each.  After we did all those, we picked a new partner and did the same drill again.

There was a lot of good, functional training today and I think it really helps.
