Tuesday Karate Class – 4/15/08 – Some days just are not good.

April 15, 2008 by doug 2 Comments

There are few days when I say I had a bad day at Karate but today was one of them.

I started class feeling really good. My hips felt better than before and everything was just feeling right but that just didn’t last. I did all of the kata that I know earlier today and they felt great. I was really ready for the upcoming tournament and don’t recall feeling “on” like this before. For the first time in a while, I felt that trained hard enough to do well at the tournament and even had my mind made up on winning.

Sensei Noia had us get our pads on as class started and then we were going to work on kihon and kata.

We started out doing some anchor man drills. It was good and I was able to throw a really nice front leg front snap kick. It was very fast and clean and I was able to do it without even thinking about it. After going against about eight people, we broke up into a larger group. I ended up sparring a young man that is a good fighter but lacks control and unfortunately for me, I caught a full power side thrust kick to the ribs.

One of the reasons that I do not like to spar is because I don’t like how point sparring and real fighting are not understood by some people. I am always overly careful not to hurt the people I spar with and I always use only enough power to score the point. My instincts told me not to spar today and I guess I should listened.

The worse part is that I also did something to my foot, I guess I didn’t notice because of my ribs, so now I have sore ribs and bad foot too. I was really psyched up and now this happens. I am going to have to rethink my strategy about sparring and Karate in general. I won’t retaliate against someone for hurting me in class just because they are careless and have no control but I also won’t subject my body to that type of abuse much more. At my age, if I need to get hurt like that, it is because someone is threatening my life and not because some kid cannot control his kicks.

As you can tell, I am really discouraged, disgusted and angry. I know this will pass and my sore body will heal sooner or later but for now, this rant makes me feel a little better.

Saturday Karate class – 4/12/08 – Kihon and basics.

April 12, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

We did much of the same basics that we did last night.  Sensei Gatch had us do a few more since the gym that we use on Saturday is longer than the one that we are at on Friday.

We did a lot of work on our kicks, which is always good for me and a lot of combination movements.   It was funny, whenever Sensei would stop to talk, he would do it when we had our left leg forward.  Standing and holding the front stance for so much time was pure torture.  I did tell him about it and he then started talking when we had the right foot forward to even them out.  We spent three quarters of the class on kihon and test preparation.

For some reason, we did a lot of push ups throughout this class.  At least 50 or more.

After our basics, we moved on to kata.  Sensei sent us out by rank.  Again, when I did my Jion, I need more hip rotation.

One really good thing that Sensei Gatch commented on was about kicks.  He made the comment that when we do a side thrust kick, the higher our knee is in front, the higher the side kick will be.  I need to experiment on my stretching a bit to see if I can improve my knee height.

Good class again.

Friday Karate class – 4/11/08 – More kihon and kata.

April 11, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Sensei Gatch had the class today.

He took us through a good amount of basics.  Many combinations and kicks.  Moving forward and backward with block and punches.  Then we did front snap kicks, roundhouse kicks and double front snap kicks and roundhouse kicks.  Even though my roundhouse kicks are nothing to write home about, I do feel that they are better than they were before.

Sensei then had us do our kata.  Sent us out by rank, watched each of us and gave advice on what we need to work on.  My problem is that I need more hip rotation in the four moves, after the front snap kick with triple punch.  If I slow the movements down, my hips turn but if I try to move fast, they hardly move from what my Sensei’s have told me.

After that, the rest of the class did some sparring but I went on the side to work on my basics with my wife.  Her back is still not back to normal and Dr. Pusateri doesn’t want her sparring.  We did a lot of basics, up and down the gym.

It was a good class and I felt that I got a lot done in a short time.
