Exceptional class – 10/30/08 – Thursday Karate class

October 30, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Exceptional is the only word to use to describe this class.

So many little things to help make our Karate better…

Sensei Cieplik gave us so many bits of good information, I am hoping that I can list all of them here;

  • Higher belts need to apply their knowledge to the lower belt kata’s.
  • At the end of the black belt kata’s, Shodan and above stand up into the ready stance and do not hold the last position like the lower ranks have to do.
  • If the draw hand fist is tilted down the shoulder is not working and the elbow cannot be pulled back.
  • Do not use the chest or rollover the knee when doing blocks.
  • When in a back stance, tension should be behind you with the elbows.
  • Punch from the eye in the back of your elbow.
  • The harder and faster you pull the draw hand back, the harder and faster the punch will come out.
  • Use calm assertiveness.
  • There is a difference between knowing the technique and doing the technique.
  • Take two moves from any kata and create a kihon drill from them.

Kata…

Sensei had us do our kata’s from Heian Shodan all the way to Kanku Dai.

The difference between higher and lower belts is the higher belt do their kata because they know it and the lower belts think about their kata.

In Bassai Dai, after we do the punch with block and punch with block, we pivot on the ball of the left foot, to point the toes to the left and move into the back stance instead of just stepping into that stance.

This class felt really good!

OUCH – 10/18/08 – Saturday Karate class

October 18, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Sensei Plocharczyk put us through a serious conditioning class today.

The warm up was a workout in itself…

Sensei had us start with two, back and forth, runs across the gym.  Next, came a shuffle back and forth across the gym.  After that, 100 jumping jacks, 50 crunches and 50 squats.

Kihon…

Sensei Gatch took us through some kihon after our warm up.

We started moving back and forth doing rising block, downward block and reverse punch.  We started in with the rising block and our hips open, we then turned our hips forward and then opened them again for the downward block and then turned them forward again for the reverse punch.

Next came front snap kick to the front and side thrust kick to side.  Then front snap kick to the front, side thrust kick to the side and back kick to the rear.

Kata with some conditioning…

Sensei Plocharczyk had us hold our balance while others did kata.  The idea was for us to hold our  balance bent over at the waist with our arms out to the side and one leg straight our behind us.  Then is was our turn to do kata and the others had to do the balancing.

The next exercise was one group did kata and the other group did speed squats until they finished.  I was able to do 69 squats in the time it took one of our black belts to finish Kanku Dai.

The last exercise of the day…

Sensei Plocharczyk had us hold our balance with one leg up like a front snap kick, we then had to bend over and touch a pad to the floor, raise upright with a front snap kick, then hold our balance and pass the pad across to our partner.  We had to do this this five times on each leg.

It was a tough class but it felt really good.

Kumite drills – 10/7/08 – Tuesday Karate class

October 7, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Sensei Noia had us work on kumite drills today.

We started class with some simple warm up drills with a partner.  Shifting in and out and working on timing and distance.

Take off your belt…

Sensei had us put one of our belts on the floor on the shape of a circle.  He then had one of us stand with one foot inside the belt.  We then did free sparring but the person with their foot in the belt had to keep one foot inside the belt at all times.  The idea was to make both of us work on proper distance.  The person with the foot in the belt could switch feet throw kicks or other attacks but could not attack or counter if the person outside of the belt shifted away too fast.  We did this drill a few times with different partners.

The next drill was a conditioning drill.  Sensei had us put the belt on the floor in a straight line.  One of us stood at one end of the belt and our partner at the other end.  We then had to step back and forth over the belt, very quickly, for 30 second intervals.  After that, we turned sideways and hopped over the belt and back.

Kata….

We finished up class with some kata.  Sensei Noia always likes us to try to do our best kata at the end of class after we are already tired from what we just did in class.  He had us do our kata with our pads on and I have a very hard time doing it when them on.  My hand pads seem to always get into the way.  I am sure it wasn’t my best kata but I gave it everything I had left.
