First class with Sensei Brien – 9/8/08 – Monday Karate class

September 8, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

This was my first class with Sensei Brien and I really enjoyed it.

Lots of Kihon…

We spent the first 30 minutes working on kihon.  We started with the standard horse stance with front punch, then double front punch and sanbon zuki.

Next came stationary front snap kick.  Sensei Brien explained the kick a little different than I have heard before and he said to kick your butt before you kick.  By pulling the lower leg back, it forces you to push your hips and knee forward when kicking.  It also helps make the lower leg whip out.

After that, we did moving forward and backward for 10 reps each with rising, downward and inward block with reverse punch.  We held the front stances for some time after each group of reps.  One really good tip that Sensei gave us was to tighten both the punching hand and draw hand when doing movements punches.  I always tightened my punching hand right before the movement of impact but I never payed much attention to tightening my draw hand too.  It makes that punch feel much stronger just by tightening the draw hand at the right moment.  Give it a try and leave a comment with your opinion if you have a chance.

After a quick water break, we did back stance with knife hand blocks.  We held the back stance for 5 minutes per leg.  My legs were screaming.  A correction that Sensei gave me was to point my draw hand toward the front and not at the angle of my body.  The idea is point my draw hand finger tips at my attacker.

Kata…

After another quick water break, we went to kata.  We started with Heian Shodan.  We did it a couple of times and then moved on to Heian Sandan.  After that came Heian Yondan.  I was pretty happy with my Heian Yondan and Sensei made a comment that my wife and I did it the way that he wanted it done.  In the third move from the last with the head grab and knee strike, you are supposed to stop and hold, then turn and look and then move into the back stance with knife hand block.  It felt good to do something right being in this class for the first time.  Another thing about Heian Yondan, when doing the head grab and knee strike, it is for breaking the ribs of the attacker with the knee strike.

Next came Jion and Sensei made another point.  With the kick and three punches, near the start of the kata, the punches are all chudon.  The first is to the solar plexus and the second and third are abdominal area.

It was a great class and I am sure that it will help fill some gaps and give me another perspective on my Karate training.

More kata and self defense drills – 7/29/08 – Tuesday Karate class

July 29, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Super warm up…

We started with suicides to each quarter distance line and back.  Next came butt kickers across the dojo.  Next, shuffle up and kick back and forth.  After that, we started slowly moving across the dojo with our knees up with arms up, almost skipping and then Sensei Noia would say “go” and we had to sprint to the far end of the dojo.  Next came low walks front and back.  Finally, moving back and forth across the dojo, we did a shuffle with a jab, shuffle with reverse punch, shuffle with front kick, and shuffle with jumping front kick.

My body was pretty much spent by the end of the warm up.

Different kata…

We did Heian Shodan the normal way.  Next we did it from end to to start.  We then did it from the start but we pivoted on opposite foot.  Instead of stepping to the left with the left foot forward, we stepped back with the right foot.  The idea was to pivot on the foot that we would normally move and step with the foot that is normally stationary.   Doing kata like this isn’t physically harder but mentaly it is extremely hard.

Kihon with a little twist…

From the ready stance, Sensei Noia had us step back with the left leg and jab, then go back to ready and step back with the right leg and jab.  Next came ready stance, step back into horse stance and do a palm strike.  He followed that with the same leg movement into a horse stance but with a backfist.  We finished those type of movements with step back into back stance and throw a knife hand block.

Self defense – based on the kihon with a twist above…

Sensei Noia had us partner up and do one-step sparring based on the movements that we were doing above.  If my partner threw a jodan front punch, I would step back, out of the way on the inside and throw a jab.

We did the similar movements with the horse stance with palm strike and backfist.  The idea with these movements was to just move enough to get out of the way of their punch and counter almost at the same time.

With the back stance, we used our drawhand to deflect the attack and then knife hand strike them in the neck.

Doing these simple movements shows that you do not need to move a lot to get out of the way of an attack and counter.

Kihon but different, adding a cat stance to the movements – 6/26/08 – Thursday Karate class.

June 26, 2008 by doug Leave a Comment

Sensei Cieplik had us start with the normal warm up but today, my front kicks were on. When I was kicking, my gi pants were actually making a popping sound. Sensei was walking past and said good while I was kicking so that set the tone for me for the rest of the class.

Same kihon combinations with a cat stance inserted.

We started with our normal combinations doing a downward with a reverse punch. We did a few of these and Sensei said to add a cat stance and block from that movement, then step the rest of the way forward and do the reverse punch. We did the same with rising block, inward block and outward block. With the inward block and rising block he had us add a jab with the blocking hand before we did the reverse punch. The reason behind this was to call more attention to our foot movements and take our attention off the the reverse punch.

The next drill was really hard for me. We moved into a front stance but with our feet in-line. We then shuffled up, threw a front leg roundhouse kick, step down back with feet back in-line again and throw a reverse punch. This was a hip breaker. Doing that movement was all about the hips because it took them from one side to the other and caused a huge stretch of the entire hip area.

Next came some hard movements, get a partner!

Two of the hardest parts of learning Karate is “get a partner” and “line up.”

The first drill with our partner was a kicking drill but on the retraction part not the kick itself. I put my foot on my partners hand, in the strike position of a side snap kick, and then had to retract it as fast as possible. Sensei wanted us to snap our leg back and hit the inside of our leg with enough force to make it pop. This sound pretty simple but getting the popping sound was not easy.

For the next drill, our partner held out their arm, straight to the side and I would side snap kick right under the armpit on the cloth of the gi that was hanging down. For some odd reason, I was able to kick higher with my left leg. Normally my right side works better but for side snap kick, my left leg was flying.

Loosen up those hips.

I am not sure about this but I have a feeling that Sensei was thinking of me when we had us do the next two drills. Or it could also be that many of the students in this class are more worldly then other classes that are normally dominated by younger students.

This is hard to explain but I will try; I faced my partner, she then holds both hands, about shoulder width apart or less, out in front with her palms facing each other. I then raise one leg up to the front and hit my partners opposite hand with the inside edge of my foot and keep it at that level then bring it across and hit my partners other hand with the outside edge of my foot.

We then did a similar movement. Our partners held their hands in the same place but this time, we swung out legs, with control, over their hands. Was started the movement swinging the leg from the outside in then from the inside out. If I am not clear describing this movement, please leave me a comment and I will take a video and put up for you too see.

Some self defense drills…

We start with our partner doing a front punch, we then spin around, under the punch, squat down and then throw a back kick. The idea is to get your body under the punch and then impale them with a back kick. It is okay to put your hands on the ground in front of you if you need to get lower before throwing the kick.

The next movement was similar to some of the movements that we have been working on in Saturday class. It starts with our partner throwing a front snap kick, at the same time, I throw a front snap kick on an angle outside of their kicking leg without extending the lower leg. The I bring that same leg down between their legs, hit them with the hip and take them down with a ridge hand to the throat. When doing the move slowly, it seems fairly simple but at full speed, I assume that timing is the key.

Finish up with kata.

We finished class with two Heian shodan’s. Sensie Cieplik told us that we need to do our kata, no matter what kata, with the skills that we have learned. His point is to do Heian Shodan like the rank you are at with the skills that you have learned, even though it is the first kata that we learned a as beginner.

I feel that their is an underlying message here and that, no matter what rank we obtain, we should still do our lower rank kata’s. Some people feel that the lower tank kata’s are just that where as, I feel that those kata’s take on a new meaning as my skills and abilities improve.
