I often wonder how important point sparring is in Shotokan and while I feel that it has value for those that want to compete in sparring, I am not sure how much it helps those that are taking Karate for other reasons.
I did not have the best sparring session tonight and it just seemed that I couldn’t get my head around it for some reason. My legs felt really slow and my distance was awful to say the least. Sensei Noia has us spend almost the entire class on sparring drills with a lot of free sparring but I just couldn’t get it.
Since I have been having so many other good classes, the odds are with me and hopefully this one class will be the exception going forward. It wasn’t that the class was bad, it was just that I wasn’t good.
